FAQ

Questions about Intercom + Gmail.

How do I convert a Gmail message to an Intercom conversation?
Gmail Email Received with specific label → Intercom Find or Create Contact by sender email → Intercom Create Conversation with subject and body. Brings inbound mail into the support tool.
Can Gmail replies be added to an existing Intercom conversation?
Yes. Gmail Email Received in reply (References header set) → look up existing Intercom conversation by message-id or by sender → Intercom Add Reply with the new email content.
How do I avoid creating duplicate Intercom conversations from one Gmail thread?
Use the Gmail thread_id to look up an existing Intercom conversation tagged with that thread_id. If found, Add Reply; otherwise Create Conversation and tag with the thread_id.
Can Intercom send replies back through Gmail?
Intercom-side outbound through email channels (using Intercom's email functionality) goes via Intercom's own SMTP, not Gmail. If you need Gmail-sourced sends, fire a separate Gmail Send Email action.
How do I AI-classify Gmail messages before routing to Intercom?
Insert Claude/OpenAI step. Classify as bug, support question, feature request, sales lead. Only route bug + support to Intercom; leads go to CRM; feature requests to product backlog.
Can I include Gmail attachments in the Intercom conversation?
Intercom supports attachments via URL. Download Gmail attachments → upload to S3/CDN → pass URL to Intercom Add Reply with attachment_urls. Or use Intercom Upload action.
